The Eastern District of Virginia has a new U.S. Attorney. Neil MacBride was formally sworn in at a ceremony in Alexandria on Friday. The former longtime aide to Vice President Joe Biden was unanimously confirmed by the Senate on Sept. 15 and was administered the oath of office three days later.

Vice President Joe Biden will be in Iowa Saturday as a special guest at the Iowa Democratic Party's annual Jefferson Jackson Dinner. Bruce Braley and Leonard Boswell. According to the Iowa Democratic Party, Sen. Tom Harkin is also expected to speak, but may miss the event if he's delayed by the Senate health care vote Saturday.  

Earlier this week, Vice President Tariq al-Hashimi vetoed the proposed election law, saying he wants more representation for Iraqis living abroad, many of whom are Sunni Arabs. Iraqi lawmakers are expected to vote Saturday to resolve a political deadlock over a much-delayed electoral law that is required for general elections in January. The move prompted Iraq's electoral commission to halt preparations for the general election set for January.  

Vice President Joe Biden today will try to inspire Iowa Democrats with less than a year until the 2010 elections when he speaks in Des Moines. But a wider Iowa audience could use some encouragement from the nation's second-in-command. Biden is scheduled to be the keynote speaker at the state Democratic Party's Jefferson-Jackson Day dinner.
